What he wanted
Pankaj came to us with a clear, short list: a modular kitchen, a crockery unit for the dining area, two wardrobes for the bedrooms, and a TV unit for the living room. He had gathered a few photographs of things he liked, and he knew his own mind on one point in particular. The TV unit was not to be a storage piece. He wanted it to hold the television and the remote, nothing more.

The challenge
It would have been easy to offer more than he asked for, an extra shelf here, a cabinet there, the sort of additions most homes end up with. The real task was to give each piece exactly the job it was meant to do, and stop.

The idea
The TV unit stayed as simple as he wanted, a wood-paneled wall with a ledge for the remote and a small display niche beside it, and nothing else added on. The crockery unit, in contrast, was allowed to be generous, a tall tower of shelves and glass ledges built for displaying the pieces Pankaj wanted on view. The modular kitchen followed in the same warm dark tones, with a marble backsplash to keep it bright at the counter. In the bedrooms, the two wardrobes each did a little more than store clothes. One kept an open shelf niche for books, the other built a full-length mirror and a pair of drawers into its center, so it also worked as a place to dress. Working from the photographs Pankaj brought us, we matched the finishes and the mood he already had in mind, rather than starting the conversation from nothing.
